Girls Toys
I remember when I was a little girl that my toys were rather simply, and I didn’t have a lot of them. I had enough, but I didn’t need a lot because I rarely played indoors. Today, girls toys outnumber the boys types, or so it seems, and they can be extremely complicated. It’s almost like walking through a minefield when deciding if something is the right toy or not, and I always wonder if I should worry so much and realize that they are just toys.
I have heard a lot from other moms about how some girls toys are not good for them because they give them the wrong ideas about what a woman really is. This was mostly aimed at Barbie for quite a while, but there are many new girls toys that draw heat from some moms these days. While I don’t have a problem with Barbie, there are some that I won’t buy for my daughter. I don’t make a point to tell her that she can’t have them though, as that would make them all the more desirable. Instead, I just don’t get them.
I guess girls toys, and all toys for that matter, are more complicated than they used to be, but I am more concerned about how safe they are. There has been a rash of recalls lately that number in the millions. Some of the toys are ones that are in my own home. Luckily, my daughter is long past the age of putting toys in her mouth, so I wasn’t concerned about the lead content. I did get rid of them, and will have to replace them with safer girls toys, but I am pretty sure that is the only worry I have at this point. I do keep my eyes out for more recalls though, as it seems there is a new one each week.
You should also think about safety when you are looking for girls toys. You can’t really tell if something has lead paint just by looking at it, but you can tell if something is going to be a choking hazard. Even when you see something that it small but seems to be attached, you have to think twice. Those things could be pulled or broken from the girls toys rather easily and inserted in the mouth. There are hundreds of great ideas for girls and boys toys out there, so you can be choosy about what you get for your daughter without having to worry about her safety.
